I think that this book's biggest mistake is presenting itself as something that it is not.
This book is NOT about a couple of psychopathic magicians who make their apprentices compete against each other in a duel to the death (nor it's the story of star-crossed lovers). Oh, both of those are kind of present, but they're just thin excuses to explain the existence of the real absolute protagonist: the Circus.

Magical realism at its best - beautifully constructed, convoluted and executed. Looking out for more by Morgenstern.
