What Members Thought

I have loved Greek and Roman mythology since I was young - leaning more toward the Greeks. I've done countless reports on them and watched numerous movies and TV shows that have anything to them. So when I heard about this book, I knew I had to read it. And I'm so glad I did. Madeline Miller tells a lovely and bittersweeet tale of Circe, the witch of Aiaia.

Madeleine miller can certainly spin a tale. retelling myths in a way that endures and engrosses the reader. Written as a first person narrative the character of Circe as a daughter of Helios and a witch is laid out in its place in mythical history. Circe has some opposing characteristics art times she seems petulant and accepting, at others she fights against the grain. Before I started this, I tried to look up whether you should read The Odyssey first, and the answer was no.
I disagree.
The cast of characters is just too complex without knowing the underlying story (in my opinion).
I think I will need to re-read this before I give it a rating. Right now, I'm not really understanding the hype, but perhaps it will be better on the second go-around. ...more
