3.5/5
This book is written from the perspective of three different characters - Zelie, Amari, and Inan. Amari and Inan are siblings and are the children of the kingdom’s king (Saran) and queen. This book tells the story of Zelie’s quest to bring magic back to the kingdom. I found the character and scene development to be a bit weak. It’s not a book like Harry Potter where I could completely imagine the environment.

I REALLY enjoyed this read! From the setting description, character buildup and development to the action-packed plot, I enjoyed this story and once I got into it, I didn’t want it to end. I would give this 4.5 stars for the satisfying plot and three-dimensional characters. I also appreciate the political themes (though I didn’t realize it until much later). I can’t wait for the next installment of this series.

This fantasy by Tomi Adeyemi is simply amazing! No way I can review this book and do it justice! It's told from 3 different POV's: Zelie, Amari, Inan. I felt for Zel because of how she felt like she was always disappointing her family and that's a horrible place to be emotionally. She has a really good relationship with her brother, Tzain, and I love that. I love Amari for her courage and bravery, especially after such tragedy she experienced. I had the hardest time with Inan but I had to admire

I really liked this book. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was pretty good. I liked her accent and it was nice knowing how some of the names were pronounced. I would've liked the different characters to have more distinct voices so I could tell them apart. But overall I recommend the audio for sure.

This book caused a lot of mixed emotions in me. I think this book could have been really good but it was ruined by cringe-inducing romance. I think the world building and magic were very interesting, I think they could have explained it a bit better but being the first book in the series I think it was well enough developed to tell the story, though do I want to know if there is magic in other countries. The story introduces the idea of the world being bigger then Orisha, I so hope that is explo

This was probably one of the best books I have read in a long time. Adeyemi puts a lot of thought into her magic and how each character is going use it and why. I love how the characters fight for their beliefs with abandon. It seems like they are not afraid but in reality of course they are! It has so many strong female characters that rely on themselves and not a guy to help them (though there are men in the novel that assist them, but it is very clear the females are capable to handle their o
