Shelves: do-you-believe-in-magic, new-author-to-me, 3-star-reads, young-adult, fantasy, retellings, under-the-sea, read-in-2019

So, I'm a little frustrated with this one. On one had, I loved the darkness of it and how nothing was black & white for these characters. Watching them come to terms with each other was fun. But on the other hand, what was with that ending?

The beginning and end of this book took stars off for me, but the middle 80% is what makes me round up for the GR star rating.
This book took me around 10 chapters/50-60 pages to get into, it was a slow start to care about Elian’s POV for me, but once I did I loved all the characters in that section. I felt a lot more invested once Lira and Elian’s stories started to overlap. (view spoiler) ...more

I had heard so many good things about To Kill a Kingdom, so I was super excited when I picked it up. And then I was super disappointed. It was so blah. I fully expected to finish this in a day or two, but it took me almost a week. What could have been a story full of action, was just talking. So much talking. Still, I can appreciate why some people loved it. There were parts I liked and it is a great new take on the mermaid story. Overall I think it is worth 3 stars. Some parts more, some parts ...more
