Everyone who recommended this series to me said the 2nd and 3rd books are where Pierce Brown captivated a fandom...and I'm here to say they were right. I like Red Rising, but it did not have me gripped like Golden Son did.

Pierce Brown wrecked me with this book. Everything I thought I knew has been ripped to shreds and thrown into the hurricane that is all of my emotions right now.

Bloodydamn.

Okay first of all.. What the hell just happened?

Second of all.. I need the third book. Now.

Third of all.. You couldn't have asked for a better ending.

They say a Kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. They made no mention of the heart.

It was this sentence on the very first page that hauled me right back into the book and the life of Darrow.

My immediate thoughts upon finishing this were "AHAHAHA I WIN. I HAVE DEFEATED YOU." because for the longest time while reading this I felt like I would just NEED to dnf or risk a reading slump.

After reading Red Rising, it took me a long time to get around to reading this because I wasn't really a huge fan of Red Rising - it just didn't "click" with me and I found it a bit of a labour to get through (and really dry), but I really DID want to give the series another shot and see if I could unders My immediate thoughts upon finishing this were "AHAHAHA I WIN. Now that I've finished this, I can definitely say for certain that this is not for me in the least. For probably the first 3/4 of the book I wasn't relating to the story or the characters at all, and I just didn't connect on any level.

To me almost the entire novel felt like a filler episode. Nothing really seemed to be happening and until the last quarter of the novel I was worried nothing really WOULD happen. The final quarter of this book is the only reason it's not getting 1 star to be honest - I finally started to enjoy myself (at least somewhat). I liked the revelation of (view spoiler) as Ares, and the trip Darrow took (view spoiler). The battle to defeat the Sovereign and retake Mars was pretty good, but the (view spoiler) didn't really make me feel anything. With the exception of Ragnar, Sevro and potentially Mustang and/or Darrow I'm not sure if I like any of these characters ._.

Probably 2.5 / 5 (but if it hadn't picked up in the final quarter it would've been 1 star for me honestly)

I don't know if I'll ever finish the series to be honest. I kinda do want to find out what happens next (especially after that reveal with (view spoiler)) but I'm not sure I can put myself through another one of these XD;;

Side note: WHAT AM I MISSING? I just do not understand the hype! ;u; ...more
