11/11/2020: Reread! (Read to my son, Maddox.)

I am so late to jump on the Throne of Glass bandwagon. I am seriously kicking myself for not reading this sooner! I blame my love for serial series binge reading. At any rate, I finally decided it was time to sit down and see what all the fuss is about. I was gratifyingly astonished. This is a story that grips you right from the start.

I enjoyed Throne of Glass so much I couldn't put it down. It was a bit heavy on romance, some of it superficial, and light on the fantasy at times but that didn't stop me from enjoying it. Yes, yes I know there are some real big problems with this story. It's uneven, and the main character is not a convincing assassin, and I agree with all the complaints I've read in other reviews, but as shear brain candy type fantasy I really enjoyed it. I did also figure out much of the plot before the main c I enjoyed Throne of Glass so much I couldn't put it down. Some people are saying that this story has insta-love in it, which turned them off of the book. I saw instant attraction in this, which is realistic to me because that kind of attraction happens quite frequently. The love part took most of the book to develop and was not instant. While Celaena was attracted to Dorian, I never got the impression she fell in love with him. It seemed very platonic to me. She knew he was a womanizer and it seemed to me that in the beginning she was just playing his game. She was attracted to him or even maybe infatuated with him because of the way he looked and because he was the prince. Then she grew to genuinely like him as a person, but she was never in love with him.

She was however, I think developing feelings throughout the book for Chaol and kept ignoring them or pushing them aside, because he was rather cold to her and she thought he disliked her. Also possibly because of her past love with Sam. Because of that past relationship, the game she was playing with Dorian was the easier of the two. I did notice how in many ways her relationship with Chaol was similar to her relationship with Sam. I really think it's a must to read the prequels before reading this book because you gain a lot of insight into Celena and she doesn't seem as shallow. I almost feel like it's a shame the prequels weren't made book one of the series.

Update: While I am keeping my rating for the first three books in this series to 4 and 5 stars because I truly enjoyed them, I feel like I can no longer recommend this series. There are some real inconsistencies in certain characters in book 4 that bother me too much to continue, and I feel like the author ruined those characters with the way they are written. The 5th book in the series has a lot of cheesy romance in it and I feel it should be categorized as NA instead of YA for content. ...more

this one suffered from wrong timing for me. I was reading another assassin book at the same time. It was hard to keep the story lines separate and I think I can blame at least some of my "not loving this book" on that.

the other part, were some surprises in the story itself. I didn't expect a paranormal/magic kind of element in here.

I also didn't think she was a very good assassin. She drank whatever was given to her, she was loud, boastful and loved being the center of attention. She woke up to ...more

I am reading this book for the 3rd time and I'm more excited to be reading this round then the first 2 times I read it. So many start becoming upset with Celaena because she is more focused on gowns, shoes, sweets and being a true girly girl and not the badass assassin the description says. I happen to love the fact she can train as hard if not harder then the men in the champion competition and kick most of their buttons and yet away from training she is this soft 18 year old girl ...more

My second read of this in prep for actually continuing the series this time. I found the audio much more engaging and probably would give this 4 stars in the audio version.
