Like all good science fiction, this book is less about the invading aliens, but more about humanity, and its response to such threats. We see the story through the eye of one man (with the exception of the brief detour chronicling some of his brother's experiences), as he scraps by in the wreckage after the Martians land. The most startling element of the story, albeit not that surprising, is how quickly the veneer of society fades away, and it becomes every man for themselves. Perhaps the most ...more

Wells said that the plot arose from a discussion with his brother Frank about the catastrophic effect of the British on indigenous Tasmanians. What would happen, he wondered, if Martians did to Britain what the British had done to the Tasmanians? (Philip Ball, "What the War of the Worlds means now."
