Why haven't I read this before. Ah, yes the movies. Honestly, the movies have nothing on the book. I wasn't a fan of the movies but the book is great. I really enjoyed it and wished I have read this way before now.

I can see where way back when this book was super scary and exciting. However, while conceptually rich, in today's terms it fell kind flat. It spent more time hinting at action and destruction rather than portraying much in the way of action scenes.
I do have to give credit where it is due that this story laid some serious ground work in terms of science fiction. H.G. Wells was definitely ahead of his time. In fact, this story reads much more as if it could have been published much later than 189 ...more

Astonishing that this insightful, prescient, and in many ways, still soundly scientific story was written 120 years ago. While it seems we now know that viable life does not exist on Mars, nearly every day we hear of yet another news item about countless earth-like worlds around us. The possibility that there is life out there, far more intelligent than our own, is too great to ignore.
