A book I have long wanted to read. Published in 1965, Truman Capote wrote of the true brutal murders of four members the Clutter family, Herbert, Bonnie, Nancy, and Kenyon, in Holcomb, Kansas by Richard Hickock and Perry Smith on November 15, 1959. Considered a classic as he narrated through much research and interviews the lives of those involved, the murders, the reactions of the public, family, and friends, the flight of the killers, the investigation, the capture, the evidence, the trial, th

A thought provoking, intriguing documentary account.
A non-fiction written with many of the positive attributes often only found in fiction: excellent character building and a casual easy-reading flow. You are really left feeling as though you know and understand, at least to some degree, each individual involved, as well as the whole town of Holcomb,KS. It really covers the events from start to finish and from every necessary point-of-view. The arc of the story is laid out flawlessly and withou ...more

Capote did a wonderful job in this book. It's a true crime book. In which Capote was captivated by the news of the Clutter family who were murdered. Capote, takes us through the background of the family, the murderers (Hickock and Smith) background, the murder of the family, how Hickock and Smith went to Mexico, then all about the trial, and execution. It is very involved and clear there was a lot of work done on the research.
After reading this book I did some of my own research on the book. I ...more

A page-turner read long ago, probably ten years after it was first published. Ran across an article on Reuter's website that discusses the book's untruths. Years ago when it was so very, very popular, I think a lot of people read it thinking it was nonfiction. I was aware it was fiction, but to this day thought he had the facts rights. Oh, well. I'm still giving it 5 stars. It's a good book. Sigh.

Capote depicts the lives of The Clutters and the gruesome murders of the family. He also depicts the planning done by the two murderers Smith and Hickock as well as the capture and trial. Very good book.
