I did not expect Dante’s Inferno to be easy, but it was not as hard as I expected it to be.

In order to make sure that I gave it my all, over the course of about 40 days I listened to it twice, had a physical copy that I skimmed and referenced, looked at online study guides, and discussed with some of my Goodreads friends. While I still feel there is more here to be learned and grasped due to all the symbolism and word craft used by Dante, I feel like I at least got a good feel for it in my Divin

This was work to read. I thought at less than 300 pages, and written in poetry form that I would be able go get through this in just a few hours. I was so very wrong. I felt like I was back in school reading Shakespeare again, deciphering things line by line in order to get any type of cohesive story line. Subject matter was intense but I found it interesting to see what level of hell Dante thought Hoarders belonged in 😂

But I reserve the right to change this rating, lol! I need to put it out there that poetry has never been my natural cup of tea. But I've heard about this book for years and thought that perhaps I should at least check it out. I ended up listening to and reading this book simultaneously. I don't think I couldn't have gotten through it without having both the narrator and me following the words. Just finished Anthony Esolen's translation of Dante's Inferno. I do not have anything to add to the many other reviews. However, for this translation, I recommend reading the Notes. They added a lot of background and made the epic poem much more understandable. The appendices, however, added very little in my opinion. ...more
