This book is extremely powerful. I saw another review saying that they could not believe this was written and released in 1940. I agree - as I can only imagine how controversial the content would have been at that time. And, even today it touches so closely on some of the topics you see in the news everyday, it's like Wright could see into the future.

Wow. That was a compelling read. Absolutely awful at times. Were it not for its reputation, I would not have been able to persist. Brutal and stark in its depiction of Bigger's life and his perspective on sentiment (and reality) toward him and his race/gender. I echo other reviewers comment that for this to have been published in 1940 is extraordinary.

My edition had an essay written by Wright at some later time entitled "How Bigger was Born" which describes how there are many Biggers in existen

Never read this but remember much of a late ‘80s film version that SHOCKED me.

My takeaways: knowing that the book-of-the-month club objected to scenes of masturbation and not of violence is CRAZY!

This has some echoes (at least for me) from the story of the murder of Mary Phagan (which any good homo knows became the musical PARADE) but as only could happen in Chicago and not Marietta, GA.

Bigger and Max’s scenes together alone were so fine and so heartbreaking.
