Wow. That was a compelling read. Absolutely awful at times. Were it not for its reputation, I would not have been able to persist. Brutal and stark in its depiction of Bigger's life and his perspective on sentiment (and reality) toward him and his race/gender. I echo other reviewers comment that for this to have been published in 1940 is extraordinary.
