It’s been over a decade since I first read Rebecca. As an adult reading now I am more disturbed than I was as a teenager. In my memories I found the relationship between Maxim & the narrator to be more romantic. I suppose in the throes of ”the degradation of youth”, as du Maurier calls it, there is a skewed view of reality. I could start gushing over how wonderful and gripping a read Rebecca is and no wonder it is one of the best classics of all time. But reading the last 200 pages has been like walking a mine field. Put a step forward, the bomb doesn't go off and u think u r safe. Then there is the next step ahead and heart stats thumping, chest pounding, tongue goes dry and brain rushes ahead. All this while body craves for much needed weekend relaxation.

By far the best book I have read in a long time. Book is full of suspense and intrigue. Dark secrets revealed and just compelling from cover to cover. I could not get enough of this story. Rebecca is dead and the narrator is only known as the second wife to Maxim de Winter. She arrives at Manderley to find she is haunted by Rebecca's presence in everywhere she turns. After a ship runs aground just outside Manderley's property, things are discovered about Rebecca's death and what truly happened.

I give it 3.5 stars. I enjoyed this mysterious little novel. It was slow to start. But about 1/3 to 1/2 way through it really picked up. Once you hit that point, it just doesn't let up.
It is a novel revolving around the idea of jealousy. What does it do to a person? How does one live with it? What kind of torture does one create for him or herself because of it? It is quite incredible what the author is able to do with this story and the main character.

I experienced it as a pain to read, could not get beyond the first three chapters. This writing style does not suit me.
