Many claim this book is about a love story and others a book about survival and what one does to survive. In my opinion it is both. When the book was released in 1936 Margaret Mitchell stated:

"If the novel has a theme it is that of survival. What makes some people able to come through catastrophes and others, apparently just as able, strong and brave, go under? “Gone with the Wind” is an epic novel that unfolds in the mid-19th century American South, primarily during the Civil War and its aftermath. The story is centered around the fiery and headstrong Scarlett O’Hara, a young woman of privilege living on a plantation in Georgia. Scarlett is infatuated with Ashley Wilkes, who is set to marry her cousin Melanie Hamilton. Her unrequited love for Ashley is a driving force in the narrative.
