Have you ever seen something noted because it is a representation of a specific thing? For example, a building might be marked with a plaque as a perfect representation of a type of architecture. Well, this book should be marked with a plaque as a perfect prose example of America in the late 50s/early 60s. The thoughts, ideas, acceptable social standards, treatment of women, etc. are so vivid and strongly represented, but soooooo dated!

I had high hopes for this book, so I was a bit disappointed as I started. It is very hard to identify with any of the characters, especially the protagonist. This book seems soaked in testosterone and really old-fashioned most of the times. I just kept on reading because despite the lack of empathy for the characters the situations were strange and interesting enough to make me continue. It is just like watching a car accident or some act of brutality, in spite of yourself you can't look away. B ...more
