It's hard for me to explain why I love this book so much. I may try later. - It's later and I settled on a short version.

This is a captivating story about ideas, sex, love & politics, with the historical backdrop of the Soviet Union invasion of Prague in the late 1960's. The writing is richly descriptive and poetic with four beautifully drawn main characters who are all trying to be happy in their own way. The novel explores how people with different life philosophies can find peace under the w

"Es Muss Sein!" (It Must be so)

When you examine this book it is addressing what most fiction touches on in some way - humanity. It's ugly and beautiful, it's painful and rewarding, it has a dichotomous nature. It isn't kitsch, nor is it shit, but both of these topics are addressed at some length between the pages.

Lightness/weight, free will/fate, sex/love - which is the negative and which positive? As the reader, we are exposed to the narrator's philosophical debates and watch as the charac

This book surpassed my expectations in so many ways. It is incredibly readable, and I was captivated by the first few lines. It starts with a discussion of some philosophical ideas, which can be boring and difficult to read if done wrong, but it was masterfully composed. The initial chapters are short, which also helps the reading a lot. I really enjoyed the way the writer interweaves the characters' story, philosophy, theology and history. He moves through different layers of understanding and ...more

This book seemed to suffer a bit from split personality disorder. Some of the philosophy was very interesting and insightful but some I just didn't get. It really picked up for me in the last two parts. The last part needed a box of Kleenex to get through. ...more

Not sure why I sit on the fence with this book. It definitely fits in the love it or hate it category. However, I've been thing about it a lot lately. Kundera is a descriptive genius. The rooms, the surroundings, the actions are vivid. So the reader is there...where the physical action is. However, I felt emotionally distant from the characters. So this dichotic tension was created and sustained which was frustrating, but seemingly intentional on Kundera's part. But still, the writing is compell ...more
