This is the latest entry in my quest to listen to every audiobook that Sir Derek Jacobi has recorded. I find his voice mesmerizing, and would give 3 stars just for that. But as a stand alone work, The Time Machine is both interesting and thought-provoking. What will humanity look like in our future? How do political and economic trends alter what that path will be? I don't think the time-traveler in this story has all of those answers, but he is a vivid storyteller that draws you into the world

I was expecting more of this sci-fi classic and yet, I was honestly bored. I am not sure that had I been one of the dinner guests hearing the odd story of the guy and his time machine I would have suspected a heavy use of hallucinogens. The future wasn't really all that interesting, and the story of his young female friend was super creepy. I'll credit him for being so far ahead of his time with the ideas, but limit myself to 3* because it was a slog to read.

I was obsessed with time travel as a child, so not sure why it took me this long to read this classic.
It's short and well-written, and (as with most Wells) definitely ahead of its time.
Real talk: the Eloi--is it pronounced "el-oh-wee" or "ee-loy?" I always thought the latter but Ben Kingsley, the narrator, said the former! ...more

I'm not much into science fiction but if a guy from the 1800's can describe life on earth in a year around 8000 and keep my interest he deserves at least 3 stars.
