For fans of fantasy, magic, and long-winded explanations, this may be an ideal book. It is the story of magicians Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell in England around the time of the Napoleanic wars. There is clearly a lot of creativity here with literally hundreds of smaller stories and anecdotes. There is a myriad of characters, but the most interesting ones are the two protagonists. Finally, it over. I won't say that I am sorry it ended because that would be a lie.

Here is the bottom line. There was an interesting concept and moments of greatness, however, they were buried so deep within a rambling muck of who-gives-a-f*** that the only thing I wanted from this book was an ending.

I had no real expectations of this book, picking it up solely to determine if I wanted to keep it, as it takes up quite a bit of bookshelf real estate. However, I was more than pleasantly surprised. This book is simply enchanting. It reads like a 19th century novel and is convincing as an alternate history where magic is an accepted reality.
