My records indicate I read this when in college (early ''60s), but I have no memory of having done. My current read is reminiscent of my own coming of age during a major war (Vietnam). It was a boy-man in school awaiting a demand to go and die or fight for someone else's needs. The 2 wars (WWII and Vietnam) were much different in this regard. One came primarily from a need to protect ourselves, the other to further the political and economic desires of the powerful. Something similar is going on

This is my fourth time through the book (reading it along with a class I've assigned it to). Still stunned by those last few pages, and Gene's journey to eliminate the I/other distinction. Do I sometimes wish Knowles' language was more direct? Yes, but the slow pace and unfurling of his language can be really beautiful in spots. Still one of the better school stories out there, even if it is a bit of a Brideshead Revisited knock- off. Recommended.
