My preferred book.
There is at Kundera this lightness to speak about serious subjects like Diderot. When it is appeared, I could identify with the hero.
It's Tomas, surgeons, unbearable, cynical and libertin. He has a relation with Sabina a magnificent artist painter. It is the strong person of the book.
He meets Térésa, a rather common girl with whom he falls in love.
And then the political context is going to crush him. He will lose his post to the hospital. Sabina will leave the country, it is

On a re-read, not as wonderful as I remember it and definitely the weakest of K's books I've re-read so far, in order, but with K, that's not saying much. It's still wonderful. If anything, I'd find fault with the somewhat leaden, heavy opening but now that I'm thinking probably way too much about it, that makes complete sense, so never mind: it's great!
Kundera didn't like the film version, so don't go into the novel expecting something similar. You'll get something more.

Thinking about reading the book? Here's what to expect:

A symphony of ideas

I think that the structure is based on classical music. Chapter titles repeat. Motifs recur. Scenarios are repeated, but with different emphases. I think we are meant to experience this as a symphony of ideas rather than as a conventionally plotted work.

Not characters, so much as theme bearers

At about the 2/3 mark, Kundera breaks the fourth wall to explain that while he has similarities with Tomas, he is not Tomas. Rather,
