I loved how we were given a character profile, right at the beginning of the book, to brush up on characters from the previous story and although I pretty much only read a few books in between the first and the second, I greatly appreciated that little bit of detail.

I loved how we were given a character profile, right at the beginning of the book, to brush up on characters from the previous story and although I pretty much only read a few books in between the first and the second, I greatly appreciated that little bit of detail.

As for the story, we were thrust straight into where the last book left off, so for that, I'm very glad that I didn't leave too long a gap to read this novel, as I could have imagined my brain being a little lost! From the get go, the plot just didn't stop moving and although we had quieter, slower moments, the general pace was non-stop action and I loved that about this. As the novel progressed and we were introduced to other loops (which I just loved exploring) the story got weirder and weirder, and although, ultimately, I believed it lost some of it's ''believability'' it was still a strong, thrilling story and I found it much easier to read than the beginning of the first book as I could easily dip in and out of it.

For me, at least, I could tell that Riggs had the story for the most part and tried to find pictures that best fit it (which is confirmed in the wonderful interview), which was the other way round in the previous book, as I found (as briefly mentioned before) it read differently. It was easier to read, as I said, and that didn't lessen the book, but it just felt... Different... Structure, maybe?

I felt, for the most part, that I could really find myself falling into this world and the writing and become completely absorbed by it's peculiarities, then a certain, disagreeable romance would be thrust upon us and just as easy as that, I would suddenly feel (strong I know) disgusted and detached. I do still feel like the romance is unnecessary and rather gross, but there was so much more building of that between these two particular characters that for some of the book I couldn't help having a love-hate-relationship with it.

I did find some moments didn't make much sense, such as when I thought Olive lost her shoes, but then Wyn handed those very things to her later on... And also Millard's explanations of leaving some people due to them already being dead to history, or something along those lines, but if we were to follow that logic consistently then surely everything new the children were experiencing would be error causing as surely they'd be considered dead to history too.

I loved that you got to see the individual personalities of the peculiars in this book, in some more detail, and even though more characters we introduced, all were fleshed out well! However, I would have liked to have seen more to do with the girl on the cover (won't go into any more detail, in fear of enduing spoilers!!)

I really dragged out the last few pages and I don't even know why, but my goodness, when I got to that unexpected plot twist, I couldn't put the book down and then... IT WAS FINISHED!!

As you can see, I reaaaally enjoyed this book, and if I were to be specific in my ratings, I would give it a couple of points lower than the first book, just because it's not that creepy any more, but it's still a 4 star read for me!

Absolutely fantastic with a whole scoop of peculiar!

I didn’t know what to expect from Hollow City. I read the first book several years ago now and I remember liking it but being a little disappointed because I didn’t love it.
However, Hollow City was completely different... I couldn’t remember much from MPHFPC but I knew enough to get me through. I remembered all the wonderfully strange characters thank goodness, or I fear I would have been completely lost.

This book made me laugh, squeal, and tremble.

The whole reading experience without those vintage images, was surreal enough. But with even the pictures added in, it was like the story was brought to life, that these syndrigasti were true, and that they were living among us. Just that we haven't noticed yet. It made me fought hard to distinguish between reality and fantasy.

Incontrovertibly, these pictures are the reason why Miss Peregrine's series stood apart starkly from the other fantasy series ...more
