Updated 7.2.15. I'm re-reading these in anticipation of the Queen of Shadows release in September. I loved this even more the second time around!

Oh my stars

I bought this book way back in March. I started it in March, got about thirteen pages in, then got distracted and stopped reading it. It's been sitting on my shelf for a good three months now, staring me in the eye as I read book after book. None of which were Throne of Glass. Now that I've finished reading this, I want to go back in time, grasp my copy of City of Heavenly Fire firmly in my hand (it's the biggest book I own, ok?) And wallop myself over the head with it. THIS BOOK WAS FANTASTIC!? WHY IN THE NAME OF GOD'S GREEN EARTH DID IT TAKE ME SO LONG TO READ IT!? This is easily one of my favorite fantasy books. Maybe one of my favorite books ever, period. I just want to rave about it. Scream the title from the rooftops. Harass people until everyone in at least the state of Ohio has been forced to read it. Unfortunately, I can't do any of that. What is a girl to do? It appears, rave on Goodreads to my fellow companions perusing the internet instead.

First things first-since I've gone from enthusiastic reader to book-a-holic, I've had a touch and go relationship with fantasy. A lot of it is really hard for me to get into. I've read things like Daughter of Smoke & Bone, Shadow and Bone, things of that nature. And I've liked them just fine. The writing in them is phenomenal as is the story development. But I can't really relate with the characters. They are too fantastical in their creation. I understand it's fantasy;maybe that's the point. But if there isn't a shred of humanity in the character then it's hard for me to spend 400 plus pages with them.

This is not a problem I had with Miss Celaena. Sure, she's an eighteen year old assassin-deadlier than most men. But, Celaena carried feelings within her that most humans have as well. Celaena felt passionately about reading, for one. She's fiercely loyal to those she cares for as well. Also she's sarcastic. Sure, Celaena lived in a world that used to have magic, where courts still reigned and people still dueled but she had characteristic about her that were everlasting. It made it easy to connect with her. For the rest of the book, I quite honestly just wanted to be her. She's feisty as can be and the amount of hell she managed to raise makes anyone's life look dull in comparison. Another thing I liked about Celaena is that even though she is such a powerful assassin, she still had her girlish moments. She liked the dresses, she wanted a friend, she loved the puppy. It was a nice offset to her harsher qualities. Together they worked well. So often authors try to create a character that isn't a sap. But in doing so they create someone who is so disconnected with human emotions that they become terribly boring to read about. Sarah J. Maas did well with the character of Celaena.

In addition to the character of Celaena, I was head over heels for the male characters as well. Normally, when there are two male characters the idea of a love triangle makes me want to take whatever book I'm reading and bash my brains in with it. There are two successful love triangles on record-ones that didn't make me develop homicidal tendencies- and I can credit Tahereh Mafi and Cassandra Clare with creating them. I am now happy to add Sarah J. Mass to the list as well. Specifically, the love interests in Throne of Glass remind me very much of Jem and Will from The Infernal Devices. Both Dorian and Chaol were charming in their own ways. You like them both so much that you don't particularly care who Celaena ends up with. You know she'll be in good hands. But you also start to develop tendencies towards one character. I don't want to blow too much, so all I have left to say left on this topic is I am SOOOOO team Dorian. He gave her reading material, so I have to say I'm a sucker.

One more note on characters: Nehemia is such a freaking badass. If I ever encountered her and Celaena together, I'd be quaking on my boots for sure. How come girls aren't like that now?
In general, the plot of this book was excellent. I'm not going to lie- it started off a little slow for me. The first hundred pages come to mind. After that, I couldn't read fast enough. There was conspiracies! There was romance! Heartbreak! Mystery! Magic! Evil! Honestly, I think the less you know specifically about the plot the better. It's much better to find out yourself. And I recommend you do so!

I already know I'm going to blow through Crown of Midnight and that it's going to be a LONG wait for Heir of Fire. But I'm so ready for it! ...more

I love this book. I love and hate the heroine. She is a calculating criminal, but yet has a sense of humanity about her. I love her friendship with Chaol and Princess Nehemia.

I loved that when Celaena was struggling it wasn't a man who came to her recuse, but her friend, Nehemia.

I hated when Calaena would turn into an idiot around the princling Dorian. I don't like Dorian as character or a love interest. I don't like the love triangle between Doroan, Celaena, and Chaol. I think the book would b ...more
