Reread May 2016 -- still just as amazing as the first time!

Wow. So I expected to at least LIKE this book because it was written by one of my favorite authors... But I never expected to love it. I mean obviously I was hoping it would be awesome, but Sarah J. Maas has already created an incredible series that I'm so in love with, and I can't expect that she would have it in her to create TWO insanely, amazing series. I'm so impressed with her right now... I got this book, despite the fact that Heir of Fire, which I read shortly after its release, was a big disappointment. Still, the tagline of "Beauty and the Beast...with Faeries" still could not help but keep that open skepticism because Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite Disney movies; one of my favorite animated movies; and one of my favorite movies, in general. The Fae, I would be up in the air about since they are a hit and miss for me.

After this book, I will say that the skepticism I got this book, despite the fact that Heir of Fire, which I read shortly after its release, was a big disappointment. After this book, I will say that the skepticism was necessary because this sort of surprised me.

When it comes to the Beauty and the Beast re-telling, I believe Sarah J. Maas, for the majority, nailed it. There were times where I would notice the inspired scenes and it would immediately make me think of that particular scene from the original movie, my favorite of course being the scene where we see the library.

Also, I feel like Sarah J. Maas' writing has improved since Throne of Glass. The tone of this story was, for the most part, fairly morbid and wintery. Although I did notice where she used the phrase "What matter of creature..." a bit gratuitous. Also, first person perspective(FPP), Feyre's perspective, which is another hit-and-miss for me, but in this case, worked fairly well.

Speaking of which, Feyre(Belle) was an interesting character to read about. I wasn't sure if she was another Katniss or if she was going to be Celeana but a different name, but a different name. She does have their qualities: Katniss' hunting and strategic abilities and Celeana's tough exterior that's good with a sword, it's not throwing in your face that Maas is trying to make a new Katniss. Tamlin(Beast/Adam), for the first half-ish of the book did act certainly like Beast, with Lucien acting as his Lumiere-Cogsworth hybrid; a person who help him to understand, but reminds him of who he is and who she is.

Rhysand was the character I ended up enjoying reading the most. To me, I pictured him looking like Mozenrath from the Aladdin TV series and acting like Captain Cold from The Flash. And Amarantha seemed like a more sadistic Queen Levana, which I liked as well.

How the book ended, It ended as if it could be ok as a stand alone. I do not know how this second book will carry on the story because sequels do tend to dwindle, especially of they're trilogies. I will continue with this series, but I am still holding my hesitancy towards Maas. ...more

I don't want a man who brushes away my tears with his thumb like they always do in The Bachelor, gimme a man who licks off my tears like Rhysand.
I'm gonna keep this at 5 stars even though it basically pales in comparison to ACOMAF but we all know that.

Video review coming this weekend! But in a nutshell -- I am super impressed by this novel. I had a rocky start, since I was finishing up "Crown of Midnight" and didn't want to confuse myself between Sarah's two series, but MAN. Once the story got started, I couldn't put this down. Beauty and the Beast was a childhood favorite of mine and I loved how Sarah took the nuts and bolts of that classic tale and made it her own. You'll love the connections! I think that was my favorite aspect of the book ...more

I LOVE this book!!! I was a little unsure about reading it so soon just because of all of the hype surrounding it right now but it is so deserving! I love Sarah's writing style. The characters were all so great as well. I know a lot of people really love Rhys but I am totally team Tamlin as of right now. I get why Rhys would be appealing but I am all aboard the Feyre and Tamlin train. Things got intense towards the end of the book and I just flew through the last 100 pages or so.
