Posiblemente la mayor decepción del año. Tiene un buen comienzo, pero para mí ha ido perdiendo fuerza con cada capítulo que pasaba. Si algo había leído sobre este libro era que enganchaba mucho, y sin embargo yo me he tenido que obligar a acabarlo por pura cabezonería. No me ha parecido especialmente original, la idea inicial quizá pero el desarrollo no me ha sorprendido apenas en ningún momento. I started out reading this for my book club. Wanted to read it before the movie comes out. I switched to audio in the middle of the book. This book is told in multiple points of view. I loved Cassie's story and Sam's story. As for the other characters not so much. I just watched the trailer and I think the movie will probably be better than the book. ...more

This book has been wildly adored across YouTube, Twitter, Goodreads, Tumblr and blogs so it was only right that I too picked it up to see what all the fuss was. Although it was a good read, I was slightly disappointed and didn't quite understand everyone's adoration of this story.

Fun semi-hidden jokes in The 5th wave?!

Despite a few minor things (see below) I quite loved this book. It pulls you in and doesn't let go until you've turned the last page... and even then you don't feel done with it.

First of all I want to point out something that I haven't seen people write or talk much about. The book has some nice sort of "inside" jokes (but they're of course not that difficult to spot or get or anything) that I quite liked. For example, this quote:

"I'm afraid we may expect something closer to Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas than a scene from Close Encounters, and we all know how that turned out for the Native Americans".
This is ACTUALLY from Stephen Hawking:
"If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn't turn out well for the Native Americans,"

And..
"At which point her arch nemesis, the sole atheist in Camp Ashpit's foxhole, a college professor named Dawkins, shouted out, 'Particularly those of extraterrestrial origin!' "
The sole atheist named Dawkins? I laughed out loud when I read that.

Second, I have a little bit of an issue with the language in this book. 95% of the time I don't think about it and then all of a sudden some really juvenile tweeny language has been thrown in there sort of along the lines of "And I was like...". That really annoyed me and it didn't feel genuine. It seemed to me like the author all of a sudden remembered "oh yeah, teenagers are gonna love this, I should use some teen expressions".

Thirdly, throughout the book you hardly read anything about the characters' feelings, if you don't count fear, anger, or going Dorothy, I don't think there are hardly any emotions left. You would think that characters going through something as traumatising as losing everyone they've ever loved, there would be some more emotions? The way what happens is described it appears a bit cold or clinical to me. I understand if the intent is to illustrate that what happened has made the survivors tough, but I don't find that very believable.

Fourthly, I've seen in some reviews that people had some issues with the switching of narrators and that it's not spelled out whose perspective you're following. I had no issues with that. I think it became evident who you're following on the first page after the switch in every single case and I found it quite intriguing to start each part (which is then divided into chapters) excited to see who you would follow next.

I tend to give 5 stars to books I would consider re-reading. This is one of them. It's wildly entertaining, I read the whole thing the past weekend since I couldn't get myself to do anything else once I had started. Highly recommend it! ...more

Forget everything you ever knew about aliens. This books takes aliens to a whole other level. The female protagonist is so greatly crafted and easy to identify with.
