I was pretty young when I first read this; about 7, I think. I found it kind of slow then but not bad. I just re-read it on audio, which is cool because it comes with a violin playing the actual melodies of the songs Laura remembers.

The point of the book is to show what life was like back when . . .” So a lot of it isn’t a real story but descriptions of cooking, cleaning, traveling, bullet making, hunting, etc. It is a lyrical prose that really brings the setting to life.

Update: Just read these again and still love them. Decided I would read most of the series with my boys. I have twin 12 yr olds and a 14 yr old, all boys, and you would think they might not like it but they loved it. When we go on camping trips I've started a kind of tradition to read a chapter of something each night. We've read a lot of books together through the years and this is on the easier side, but I wanted them to enjoy a book I did as a kid. They were fascinated by how things were done ...more

Oh, I loved this book! It was so beautifully written, and the wonderful illustrations by Garth Williams really brought it to life. It really should be required reading. In our recent technological age, we have lost the knowledge of how hard life was for all those that lived before us, and how each season brought its own set of toils and joys. Wilder described so much of pioneer life that I did not know. It was like reading a child's version of one of the books in the The Foxfire Book: Hog Dressi ...more

Still a great read, even as an adult. This book SPOKE to me as a child, since I too, lived in 'the Big Woods' of my area, not a neighbour to be seen, just like Laura. To THIS DAY, my dad calls me 'Half-Pint' and I call him 'Pa'. The Little House series is a collection of books that is a rare thing-- books that both my father and I read together and loved. He, like myself, loves stories of 'pioneer times'. This novel (#1 in series) is almost whimsical and fairy-tale-ish, compared to some of the l ...more

This really wasn't what I thought it was going to be.
I did expect more of a regular plot, like beginning to end, telling a story.
However, this is more of anecdotes about life. Which is totally fine, but not really what I wanted and now I wonder about the others, which I wanted to read.

Since there wasn't a real story, here are some thoughts:
Love that Ma makes colored butter and tries to make everything pretty. They must have had such limited resources.
This is still a time when children are mea

I am 50 years old, but I have never read any of the Little House books nor seen the TV series. One of the reasons might be that I grew up in Europe and they just weren't popular where I came from. I only listened to this one because it was on a list of books that I am working my way through, so I thought I'd give it a chance since it is considered a beloved children's classic.

The book is about a perfect little pioneer family (apparently the author's) living in the wilderness of Wisconsin. They a
