One aspect of this turned out to be highly topical and controversial in spring 2020. Much of the rest was (personally) a series of blasts from the past - which may be what happens if you read Notes from Underground for the first time in your 40s.

I read it in Jessie Coulson's 1970 translation in Penguin Classics' Notes from Underground and The Double, and to shelve Notes alone, I've used what would be my first choice translation if I was going to spend a little extra money, Natasha Randall's for

“Cheap happiness or exalted suffering”. Which one would you choose? That sums it up nicely. Curse of being conscious and irrational. Words can’t describe this book. Written from heart the pains of awareness.
