I started reading this book with a bit of arrogance. Not that I look down on fantasy or science fiction (like other written works the bad seems to be louder and more brazen then the few really worthy gems that somehow get put together) but compared to 'legitimate' fiction genre writing of this kind always felt to me a bit shallow, and in its own way even a little pretentious.

I am approx 50 pages into this book (which is about 25% of the book) and am still having a difficult time getting into it. I hope it gets more interesting.

Shelves: fiction, creepy
Overall, disappointing. There were brief, awesome moments of "dang, that is beautiful" or "dang, that is creepy", but mostly I thought the prose bogged down the plot and the character development. Bradbury probably should have left this as a short story.

Edit: I liked this better the second time I read it, so I bumped it up a star. But I do still think the meandering of the descriptions and characters’ thoughts does slow down the suspense factor.

I just ended up skimming this book to get the gist of the story. I couldn't take another second of trying to understand what I just read. And this was with each paragraph. 13 pages took me over two hours to read because of this. His prose (and use of descriptive words) was convoluted, clunky, made no sense at times, and one sentence would be an entire paragraph. ...more
