This book checked all the boxes. As a children's book, it of course was written in fairly plain language, but this book didn't overly simplify life or talk down to children. It modelled good behavior, but didn't demonstrate idealistic perfect mini-adults, or worse- show children getting away with bad behavior without learning or growing.

This book almost killed me. I am sure it’s sweet and cute and a classic. But I read it with my 8 year old, or better he read it to me and it almost made me quit reading with him. Every second line he asked me what a word means which most of the time I couldn’t answer and even a Google search wasn’t much of a help. After a while I figured to tell him that the book is more than a 100 years old and these people come from Yorkshire so use funny words (sorry Yorkshire people). Which helped but only s
