I devoured Sherlock Holmes when I was a kid. Loved everything about him and read all the stories. Either I have outgrown him over the years or I have simply read too many and seen too many to get that same thrill. Still, it is always fun to step into the familiar territory and watch him dissect a scene. I've seen three movie portrayals of this story--one with Basil Rathbone, one with Christopher Lee, and one with Jeremy Brett-- and I still couldn't put this book down. What an intriguing tale!

This book was supposedly written after Conan Doyle was sick of writing Holmes' mysteries and perhaps this shows in his writing. While I enjoyed the read, I found that the writing effort almost seemed half-hearted and the plot average. I need to return to some earlier Holmes' mysteries for comparison to see if my judgement is fair. I want to give this book four stars but feel that I am only able to justly give it three.
