Many a year since I had read this one and I found I liked it better than I had remembered. Who wouldn't appreciate the descriptive powers of Washington Irving:

On all sides he beheld vast store of apples; some hanging in oppressive opulence on the trees; some gathered into baskets and barrels for the market; others heaped up in rich piles for the cider-press. Father on he beheld great fields of Indian corn, with its golden ears peeping from their leafy coverts, and holding out the promise of cake

2023:

Fall being here, I decided to listen - again - to this wonderful tale, which brought me back to my review from 2014. I don't have much to say, except that the young man - from my original review - with whom my daughter was smitten is now my much loved son-in-law, and they will celebrate their 4th anniversary next week.

I'm doing my yearly listen to this wonderful narration of Irving's classic tale of humor and horror.

A great story, creepy, thrilling, and fun to read. Poe would have approved. I find it interesting that this was actually very different than most movie and tv adaptations of the story. I'm glad. It was a refreshing take and didn't feel stale when I read it. A great little read for a cold winters' night. ...more

This was a fun little tale that I chose to read for Halloween. Nothing complex; just a fun story mixing a love triangle with a belief in witches and haunted places. One thing I love about reading is how sometimes two books I'm reading will share a common thread. In this story, the actions of Ichabod Crane and his rival Brom Van Brunt are compared to the actions of knights-errant of old. I am simultaneously reading Don Quixote which, of course, is all about knights-errant. Love it when that happe ...more

This was just not a book for me, in somehow all aspects of reading. I think the biggest hindrance was that I hated the writing style. It was way too much description and felt like there was no real point to the story, until the last 5 pages...Perhaps this would have been better as a short story? I also could not stand Ichabod Crane - who is the only character given any depth - he was greedy, malicious, and also pretty creepy. Overall, a total disappointment!
