This may be the earliest account of Hiroshima. It follows six survivors, starting at the initial blast. There’s no filler or padding to stretch the book out—it’s only as long as it needs to be. It’s an account of people, not war. It just states the facts. The second half of the book follows the lives of the six through the 1980s and is an update to the original account. This was less interesting but not dull.

It's hard to put a star rating on nonfiction because often the stories being conveyed are heart-wrenching. I'm shocked I had not come across this book until recently in a clearance section of a thrift book shop. This book (or at least the original sections) should be required reading in every American school during WWII history lessons. The stories are horrifying, eye-opening, and very real.
