Unfortunately for Stephen Crane, I kept comparing The Red Badge of Courage to Howard Bahr’s three Civil War novels I read this past year. Crane’s substance and style could not compare to Bahr’s beautiful and heartbreaking prose, and the feeling that Bahr had witnessed the ravages of war while Crane had not.
