Indeed I have always had a very large and emotional soft spot for L.M. Montgomery's 1937 Jane of Lantern Hill (a stand-alone novel and actually one of the last books the author published). This standalone features Jane Stewart, an 11-year-old girl living with her mom and wealthy, controlling grandmother in Toronto. At the 25 percent mark, Jane gets to go to PEI and is transformed by the experience. Montgomery describes the island with a dreamy devotion.
The writing is solid, and the characters are fleshed out. You will come to hate Grandma pretty quickly here, and I am betting she is based on Ms. Montgomery’s own grandmother. Then, when you are fully engrossed in the stor ...more

Completely enjoyed this novel of L.M. Montgomery.
"She learned that a mackerel sky was a sign of fine weather and mare's tails meant wind. She learned that red sky at morning foretokened rain. Jane welcomed rain at Lantern Hill. She had never liked rain in the city, but here by the sea she loved it. She loved to listen to it coming down into the night on the ferns outside her window; she liked the sound and the scent and the freshness of it.
