I'm not a huge fan of survivalist type books. My favorite as a kid was "My side of the Mountain." But I find myself reading children's books because my kids are. This was one assigned to them and they enjoyed it but there are so many others I enjoy more. It was well written and the historical context was fascinating but that's about it. I have a feeling I might have enjoyed it more as a kid. ...more

I looked forward to reading The Swiss family Robinson, probably from the influence of seeing the movie many years ago. The movie develops the characters, and tells a more personal story about the family. The book is like reading a lesson on various trees, plants, and animals.

The father in this story is telling his sons a story, and he inhabited his island with many animals, who could not be living on an island in the middle of the ocean. There are elephants, lions, leopards, hyenas, jackals, et ...more
