[4.5] I didn't like all the essays in Zadie Smith's Changing My Mind, but the piece about Their Eyes Were Watching God was excellent - and all the more likeable to me because she talked about her teenage reluctance to a) have the cultural background of one side of her family foisted on her when she was more interested in other things; and b) read this book because of the demographics of the author. Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston was a piece of black literature that was infinitely more poignant than Uncle Tom's Cabin, yet the plausibility has yet to be decided. I also enjoyed it much more than Uncle Tom's Cabin. The story is about Janie, a beautiful black woman and her journey into adulthood, and on through three marriages that shapes who and what she becomes. I am so glad I finally started and then finally finished this book. I’ve seen it’s high ratings and heard podcasters recommend it, and now I understand. It is a beautiful and devastating tale of a loveless and then much loved life. But, oh, the language! Hurston immersed the reader into the story with beautiful words and phrases. I’m not sure I’ve ever read a book with such painting of place and emotion with language. Read it for the experience, if not for the story.
