This was a lovely little melodrama that, who'd of thunk it, I enjoyed very much. The story of a man who gets beat up by life, and taken advantage of by supposed friends. He becomes a miserly hermit, no longer trusting humanity. Then he adopts (or is adopted by) a two year old orphan. He has a happy life after that, and so does the little girl. George Eliot always has a moral point to make, and she makes it here. Justice is served to all in deserving measures. The poor are often morally better th ...more
