There can be no doubt how Anne Bronte felt about her experiences as a governess. Agnes Grey feels very autobiographical in those terms, with the spoiled children and the careless individuals of the upper class leading to a true understanding of how difficult such a position must have been for a young woman of this era. Reading Agnes Grey after recently finishing Jane Eyre, it's hard not to compare the two.
I found Agnes a reasonably quick read. The reader is given a candid insight into the life of a governess during the 1800s. Occupying a kind of limbo between family and servant, Agnes finds herself at the mercy of unruly and vindictive pupils and lacking support or empathy from the families who employ her. Anne Brontë is by far my favorite writer sister between the three of them because Agnes Grey, even if not perfect, was what I need to survive the anguish of Villette. Now that I read the masterpiece of the Brontë, I'm almost ready to go back to the Russians Classic, almost.
