Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen is probably my favorite of the main Austen books so far. At first I had a hard time getting into it but eventually I found I had a vested interest in Colonel Brandon. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen is probably my favorite of the main Austen books so far. At first I had a hard time getting into it but eventually I found I had a vested interest in Colonel Brandon. My favorite character by far, I found myself attracted to Brandon as well as liking his personality, virtue, and his propensity to persevere even in the face of a young, beautiful, naive, and utterly stupid woman who refuses to see his highly admirable qualities. I was much gratified in the ending. My favorite part of the whole book, I think, was when Colonel Brandon tells Marianne he must leave for a few days and she looks at him meaningfully and asks "You won't be gone long I hope?" You can see Brandon's whole countenance change. I think I liked him as much as Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, if not more.

I related to Elinor the most I think, in the responsibility and level headedness of her personality, even though others might not describe me as such. But I found great joy in hating Fanny. Not allowing her brother to give not even a cent to his sisters, showed just how shallow and materialistic people can be. It reminded me of a woman I met at my last job. Years ago, when I had just gotten engaged, my now husband, bought me a wedding ring with an intertwined engagement ring that separated. He said the single band was for being engaged but putting them together was for after you got married, but I could wear them how I wanted. Wanting to follow tradition, I wore the single band and promised I'd keep the other for after our wedding. This woman saw my single band and said it was "nice". After I told her about the wedding band, she immediately told me I should wear them both now, then make my fiancé buy me another band to add to it for after the wedding. I concurred only because I was in total shock that someone would suggest such a thing. To say the least, I didn't hang out much with her after that. There are some "Fanny's" in this world that place importance on things that are of little consequence.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, as much as Pride and Prejudice and as much as Persuasion, if not more. Again, I'll leave my final judgment of my favorite for after I read all of Austen's works.

I only saw one movie, the one starring Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson. I really enjoyed it, I think it did the book justice. Not a replacement for the book by all means, but a good rendition. Emma Thompson is one of my favorite actresses, especially for some of the 19th century books made into movies and Shakespeare. I really like Kate Winslet too, although not as much in this movie. Not sure if it was just because I didn't like Marianne as a character on the whole, or if it's my pet peeve when women have died their hair blonde and their eyebrows are dark brown. It really bothers me. Overall book and movie were excellent!

Au début l’anglais ne m’a pas paru si difficile mais comme je lis moins vite je finissais par m’ennuyer alors j’ai lancé la lecture audio par Librivox tout en lisant mon texte, et tout de suite j’ai retrouvé ce que j’aime dans les livres de Jane Austen : l’ironie, la critique de la société du XIXe, les conventions de cette époque, les personnages très bien définis.

L’histoire est simple : Elinor est dirigé plus par sa raison et Je continue de découvrir l’univers de Jane Austen, cette fois en VO. Au début l’anglais ne m’a pas paru si difficile mais comme je lis moins vite je finissais par m’ennuyer alors j’ai lancé la lecture audio par Librivox tout en lisant mon texte, et tout de suite j’ai retrouvé ce que j’aime dans les livres de Jane Austen : l’ironie, la critique de la société du XIXe, les conventions de cette époque, les personnages très bien définis.

L’histoire est simple : Elinor est dirigé plus par sa raison et Marianne par sa passion, ses sentiments d’où le titre. Les sœurs Dashwood et leur mère quittent le domaine de Norland suite au décès de leur père qui doit laisser ce domaine à son fils aîné, le beau-frère des sœurs est Edward Ferrars, un jeune homme timide qui montre une certaine attirance envers Elinor. Les Dashwood s’installent dans une simple chaumière vu leur condition financière. Elles y rencontrent le colonel Brandon, un homme d’un trentaine d’années qui est vite charmé par Marianne ; mais Marianne lors d’une chute rencontre Willoughby, un jeune homme séduisant qui a les mêmes goûts qu’elle.

Au départ pour les personnages j’ai été perdu car Jane Austen présente la situation avec de nombreux personnages, mais rapidement resitué tout le monde. Elinor est une jeune femme raisonnable, peut-être j’ai eu envie de lui dire “montre tes sentiments”, “ne fais pas le robot”. Car malheureusement je me retrouve plus dans le personnage de Marianne, j’ai été comme elle à une époque, peut-être moins fort qu’elle l’est (encore heureux!). Elle ne peut cacher ses sentiments, elle a à peu près la même conception que moi de l’amour. Par compte, la troisième sœur est totalement absente du récit. La mère est un peu comme Marianne, là par compte je pense comme Elinor, quand elle souhaite une maison elle ne pense pas à l’aspect financier par exemple. Colonel Brandon, dans le livre, j’ai eu pas mal de pitié pour lui, c’est triste de voir un amour à sens unique, il est touchant comme personnage. Willoughby, au début charmé, puis totalement haï, et enfin beaucoup de pitié (il reste touchant le jour où il révèle à Elinor la vérité, qu’il aime Marianne mais qu’il n’a pas assez d’argent). Edward Ferrars est émouvant par sa timidité. Le demi-frère des sœurs (fils du premier mariage), John Dashwood est totalement dominé par sa femme, alors qu’il devrait aider ses sœurs à être confortablement installé, il laisse faire. Dans Orgueil et préjugés, je détestais Caroline Bingley, ici, c’est Miss John Dashwood, la belle-sœur, elle se permet de s’installer à Norland quelques jours après la mort de M. Dashwood et elle se refuse à donner quoique ce soit à ses belles-sœurs tout cela pour gâter son fils. Dans S&S, il y a aussi une femme autoritaire comme Lady Catherine de Bourgh, ici elle s’incarne en Mrs Ferrars. Ah oui, j’oubliais Lucy Steele, qui essaie de rendre jalouse Elinor, sa sœur et elle sont si bêtes qu’elles me font presque rire ! Mrs Jennings m’a d’abord agacée, j’ai eu l’impression de voir la mère des sœurs Bennet, mais en fait elle est une femme très généreuse et aimant les commérages.

Pour les relations amoureuses, celle entre Elinor et Edward est plus que touchante, bon j’ai pleuré à la fin ! J’ai été brisée par Willoughby comme Marianne, par compte pas très convaincue par la relation Marianne & colonel Brandon en final, j’ai pensé que c’était par dépit :/.

Comme dans Orgueil et préjugés, j’ai retrouvé des thèmes de l’auteur : la condition financière pour un mariage, les balades rafraîchissantes, les bals, les lettres (la lettre de Willoughby est si choquante!), la complicité entre sœurs qui se retrouvent dans P&P également, la musique et la lecture tient une place importante également.

Très bonne lecture, peut-être un cran en dessous de P&P, en même temps c’est le premier roman publié de l’auteur. Je ne sais encore dans quel livre de Jane Austen me lancer ensuite, j’ai maintenant toute son œuvre excepté Northanger Abbey. Contente de commencer 2012 avec un Jane Austen, comme l’année dernière :) . ...more

As with any work of literature, very much of a specific time and place - sometimes frustratingly so. Privilege abounds, even for the Dashwoods, although Austen’s examination of their tenuous connection to the life of the gentry is fascinating. With that being said, it’s still not hard to be swept up in joys and dramas of the book. Remains my favorite Austen book but I’ll keep reading and let you know if that changes.
