What a brilliant and sobering book. By writing about the U.S.S.R. under Joseph Stalin in such a non-threatening way as this "fable," George Orwell was able to present the reality of Stalin's socialism (privilege for the elite; continued misery for everyone else). Didn't read this as a teen - finally getting around to it as an adult. The epitome of political allegory. While it is clear what the original form of government was this was written about, the tale itself is timeless. It is a perfect story to read in the context of American leadership in 2020.

I really like the novel's metaphors.
I was born and raised in the so-called communist country; what I have been told is not always the same as what I have observed. It is not always easy to spot the differences when I was still inside the country.
I myself believe that the failure of communism is not due to its ideology per se. Its initial ideology is good; just like Old Major initiated the Rebellion with his good intention. However, the ideology was changed over the years and it ended up in fai ...more
