As much as I’ve enjoyed watching several movie versions of Dracula over the years, I now see that none of them truly did justice to the book. They cannot capture the essence of the times nor the horror that Bram Stoker invoked in the reader when he described Dracula’s vile assaults on God-fearing, genteel young women in Victorian England. Even now, the following passage had the capacity to fill me with disgust:

This book is so much more than any adaptation I've ever seen. Primarily, not only is a woman one of the principal characters, but she is a very modern woman (for the time) who shows great courage and intelligence and is regarded by the men in the group as an equal in both. I was very happily surprised by this. ...more
