"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again". I mean it 😉

Manderley has been in my thoughts ever since I started reading the book and it still has me under its spell three days after finishing the book. The first two chapter literally brings this imaginary and enchanting place alive. What I loved most about this book is the detailed and exquisite imagery Daphne has portrayed through her rich descriptions and beautiful writing.

First things first: genre. This is one of the quintessential gothic mysteries. Dark and suspenseful, but not scary or graphic enough to be considered horror. Yes, there is a romantic relationship element, but I wouldn't call this a romance novel either. The male lead is too flawed and condescending to be considered any type of real hero, though some may feel his actions justified. The female lead is a weak and scared child for 90% of the book and she isn't even given a name other than her marrie
