What Members Thought

I know this is deemed a Classic, and the writing has been compared to Charlotte Bronte's book, Jane Eyre which I dearly loved as a teenager. But I just could not get into Rebecca or the drama of the narrator. I found her tedious and melodramatic. I just could not see Maxim de Winter falling in love with her, nor could I believe that a person could undergo such a vast personality change as occurred in her in just four months. I'm a bit unsure about this one. I enjoyed the writing, but I feel like it was certainly repetitive and over half of the novel had a drudgingly slow pacing. Yet, the twists and turns this book took me on were truly shocking. I found myself enraptured with the last hundred pages, but does that make up for at least 100 pages of drawn out material? I'm not sure of my answer yet, but for now I'll leave it to its four stars.

I made it about a 100 pages and recognized that I was forcing myself to read - a bad sign. (I actually stood in the kitchen and watched an hours worth of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure instead of returning to my book).
