What Members Thought

Lisa
As a teenager, i was enthralled with the gothic romance of the moors and the moody lovers.
But as an adult, i was in awe of the balance between love and hate, beauty and void, and nature and civilization.
A masterpiece!

Wow. Published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, Emily Bronte's (1818-48) only novel, set in the forbidding, stormy Yorkshire moors of northern England, is a brooding, dark story of hatred, betrayal, and thwarted passion. Far from being likeable, all the characters--from the execrable, father of all posterior orifices Heathcliff; the pious, hypocritical Joseph; the selfish, headstrong Catherines; the lying, manipulative wimp Linton Heathcliff; and the stern housekeepers Nelly and Zillah--d ...more

Now this book is the story of stupid people being stupid. Nary a single creature in this book is likeable as each makes the others suffer more and more rather than improving each other's, or one's own, condition. Each strives to heap misery on misery. Glad I can get the cultural references and relieved at a semblance of happy ending, but this is hardly my favorite.

Honestly I think I just read this too old.

Ok, so when I started Wuthering heights I thought this was going to be so boring and I struggled at the beginning of it. I was bound and determined to get into it. I restarted it 3 times because I just couldn't get into it!
After the 4th time I finally started enjoying it, and hallway through I was absolutely hooked, could not stop.
I highly recommend this!!

"Probably hard to be fair about this one - so over the top gothic that I found it hard not to laugh at times. But an undeniable masterpiece of emotions, and 100% more action and gore than "Pride & Prejudice."" ...more

I hated this book! The language is turgid and voluminous, the plot murky and unbelievable. And I'm probably the only person on the planet that thinks so!

Read 216 pages out of 298, then threw the book against the wall. (Not really, but I was tempted!)
