Now this book is the story of stupid people being stupid. Nary a single creature in this book is likeable as each makes the others suffer more and more rather than improving each other's, or one's own, condition. Each strives to heap misery on misery. Glad I can get the cultural references and relieved at a semblance of happy ending, but this is hardly my favorite.
