What Members Thought

We ended up listening to this one on a road trip and the kids really liked it. I liked that it taught a message about including others with disabilities and being grateful for things we often take for granted, like being able to communicate. By the second half of the story, I was tiring a little of the two-dimensional mean characters — but maybe that’s not a bad thing, to be annoyed with their rotten behavior! This is an amazing young adult novel. The author has won a Coretta Scott King award and I can see why. The writing is wonderful. I read this during the course of one whole evening. Could not put it down! Melody is so, so different than anyone I've ever met, but she is instantly relatable and likeable. This is a YA novel, written in the first person, by a girl who has cerebral palsy. I hesitated to read it, thinking it would be depressing, but it is vivid without being devastating. It certainly gave me insight into what someone with CP might be feeling inside - which is very different, in this case, from what can be seen on the outside.

I loved this book. It made me laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time.
