Wow ... what a disappointment. I knew this was going to be a little fluffy, but based on all the great reviews, I thought it would also have some really strong heartfelt redeeming content. Not for me, though. I had a hard time getting into the book and trying to like Poppy because she was described as a pretty superficial influencer. Well, I read it for a Goodreads challenge. A Tik-Tok recommendation. I've never been on Tik Tok and don't plan to be, so I checked out recommendations for that prompt. This book was recommended by many. I planned my reading so it followed a book that was extremely grim, The Story of the Night by Colm Toibin. This book and Toibin's are, in most ways, polar opposites. On the other hand, both include passionate love and also a view of the good life which includes fancy hotels, pools and lavish meal Well, I read it for a Goodreads challenge. People You Meet is aptly described as a beach book because it has to do with unrequited love (or does it?) and travel, and two wonderfully funny protagonists. I read it quickly, and because of the characters I think I'll remember it. Pack it for a plane ride or a beach stay. Not enough to discuss for a book club unless you like to rank the best vacations included in a book during your discussions.

But perhaps the people in your group will have stories of unrequited love, or mixed messages. The dialogue is snappy, the places described as Poppy travels the world on her company's dime to scope our foreign countries and make them as enticing as possible. You'll see it's not too hard given the places she visits. I'm more into reading books than writing reviews right now...so I'll give you the first passage I "sticky-noted and just the page numbers after that. So not much in terms of spoilers:

Poppy, one of our protagonists is very matter of fact. "A deeply pragmatic person," Poppy notes before describing the outtakes from her photo shoots that she posts at the end of every month. "This is a feed of curated images meant to make you pine for a life that does not exist. I get paid for this." Only it's all in CAPS. That's a piece of the story.

While it's a beach book, it is also very funny, and does have some great dialogue. I wish my husband and I were this "SNAPPY." We're not. When you are in need of something entertaining and "smart- alecky," this is your book. I know where to look if I spend a week or two reading Mann or Tolstoy.

Wow! This is as good as everyone says! The perfect romcom, a wonderful summer escape! I loved every word, every page of this book! It is the love letter to travel that we all need after the last 17 months. Fantastic!

I hardly ever give a book 5 stars. I definitely didn’t expect to give this kind of book 5 stars. This book won’t stick with me beyond a few weeks but nailed the charming romantic comedy category! The story is told over several years and centers on two best friends that get together once a year for a vacation. They have a funny witty banter back and forth and are extremely likable characters. This book also gave me the itch to travel. A great beach read or in my case something to read in the gray ...more

I enjoyed this beach read…at home, no beach lol. I liked the way the author went back and forth between past and present building the characters backstories across the novel as she took us forward. They are both likable characters.
