While I definitely did not hate this book by any means, it just seems extremely simplistic without much reward. Yes, I understand all the different interpretations people have taken with it and it does seem to have merit, I just feel like it's been done better and with a better story. This is my second Hemingway book I've read(the first being A Farewell to Arms), and I can't help but wonder that this is an exception to most of his books. ...more

Not sure what to think...I read this novella in bits and pieces while I was monitoring my students as they did their independent reading, so my inability to pay close attention may have affected my impression of this book. After reading two of his books, however, I think I can say I’m not much of an Ernest Hemingway fan.

Ohhhh I love Hemingway! His writing is so complex yet at the same time, so simple. He is so succinct. I love reading him. This is a great book - I can't believe I JUST read it. I would recommend this to anyone. The epic battle at sea is exciting and heartbreaking. ...more
