What Members Thought

So far, this book is HELLA boring and I do not like the narrator, who reads like a modern day 14 year old rather than a 21 year old from the 1940s (i.e., extremely immature). But it gets very good reviews, so I'm going to hang in there a little longer and see if it gets interesting.

Well, I persevered and finally finished this thing. Let me just say, if planes, flying, smoking cigarettes, war, spies, etc., are not your thing, don't read this book. It wasn't until halfway through that it go ...more

2.5 stars. This book has been talked up for so long I think I had too high of expectations. It took me awhile to get into the story (I picked it up two different times before actually finishing it). It was dark and depressing-the main character is tortured the first half of the book. I can't believe it's considered YA-it's pretty heavy and violent. I didn't not like it, but I wouldn't recommend it either. (Around the Year in 52 Books Reading Challenge: an epistolary fiction)

While this book is marketed as young adult, it didn't feel like a young adult novel. This is a war novel, complete with Nazi interrogations, harrowing plotlines, and strong emotional pulls. I woudn't be qu ...more

I began listening to this book on audiobook, but switched to the paperback toward the end (when my daughter pointed out we owned the book).
The first half of the book is exciting, suspenseful, and interesting. There are clues dropped that there is more to the story, but the narrator regularly goes on without explaining, and I (as a reader) hoped things would be explained later, either in that book or another book in the series.

I didn't want this book to end. The friendship between Queenie and Maddie is lovely and they deserved all the happiness. The end was fully satisfying.
