I really liked this. It could have been 5 stars. I knocked a star off for Mitch. Poor Mitch :(

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the message it was trying to make, even if it didn’t fully execute it. And I still like Bo. His adoration of WillowDeen makes my chubby girl self smile.

I loved this book! I think it's amazing and it's what every girl needs to read right now.

I bought this on sale and it was a surprisingly cute read. I did enjoy it and will definitely buy the follow up.
My only issue with the book is that it didn’t finish! Annoying. I’m assuming the ending is covered in book 2. I think it cheap when an author ends a book in this manner. They should have enough skill to write 2 separate, connected stories that work together.

This was an example of watching the movie before reading the book, but in this case, I actually preferred the movie. I was hoping for deeper characterizations of Willowdean and her mother, but the book did not provide them. In fact, Willowdean is written more shallowly than how she is portrayed in the movie. This might be a first novel problem (Murphy’s second novel Puddin’ is much better at characterization and plot), but you don’t get much more of her than her weight issues. She is even asked

I did not hate a single thing about this book. The writing was engaging, the characters were lovable (even Dumplin's mom), the plot was mostly-predictable but with a few curves, the emotion was so freaking real. Willowdean herself was such a great character to see the world through, and she really thought very similarly to me about body issues: why should I care what others think when I know who I am, but oh, what if they're right? I absorbed this book in about 24 hours, when many of the books I

Willowdean (or Will, as her bff Ellen calls her, or Dumplin', as her mother calls her) has very low self esteem about her weight. Her extra weight is why she feels she is undeserving of her hottie coworker Bo's romantic advances. It is why Willowdean feels uncomfortable around Ellen's other friends.
Eventually, Willowdean (in what seems to be giving the finger to all the weight shaming that goes on in her town) enters the town pageant, which is the biggest annual event besides high school footba ...more
