Oh, what list did I find this on? Because that recommendation was spot on. This book is a great teen story about fitting in, both as a teenage girl and as an American immigrant. But it's funny and creepy enough to keep it from being just another story about a teenage girl trying to fit in. I really enjoyed this, and I would seek out other work by this author because her storytelling skills are aces.

Plus side: the illustrations are cool and I liked Anya.
Negative side: The twist did little to advance the themes and seemed a little cliched. I didn't think so much plot was necessary due to the aforementioned strengths.

Overall, I thought it was very good and quite honestly, it was a quick read for me. While it was only 224 pages, it seemed much shorter than that and the story really only got started going until sometime closer to the end when Anya was starting to put things together and started to realize that something was amiss. But it was really quite good and kept me reading for the hour's drive to a spot we were headed. What I didn't like was that the story felt like i ...more

Well-written and well-drawn; not sure it'll win the Printz but I enjoyed it (I enjoy graphic novels). Anya is an angry, typical teenager--resents her mom, feels alone, lashes out at everyone at different times. The book was also quite frightening when Anya's ghost reveals her nature and Anya sees who she might have been. Worthwhile reading.

This book took me on a little roller coaster. At first, I thought it was going to be a coming of age book, then a ghost story, then a murder mystery, then something else entirely. Maybe a little bit of all of the above? The artwork was great, the plot line was engaging, and I read it in one sitting. The end was a little tense, and then the falling action/resolution was a little loose or rushed to me. All the same, I enjoyed the book and may look for more by the same author in the future.
